Over Easter weekend, Tad’s parents came down to help us put in a new kitchen floor!
Day #1 (Thursday)
Tad and I removed the old green carpet (can we talk about how ugly it was?!) and the disintegrated foam underneath. We started to brainstorm about what to do about the black “tar-like” substance left beneath.
Day #2 (Friday)
Trip to Lowe’s first thing for scrapers. Then… All. Day. Long. We scraped black tar gunk off the floor of the breakfast nook. Moved all the appliances out. Late in the evening, we removed ALL of the old linoleum in the kitchen.
Day #3 (Saturday)
Trip to Lowe’s for leveling compound. We used leveling compound to even out the floor in the places it was uneven. We started laying the new floor mid-afternoon. We measured, cut, trimmed, snapped, and hammered the floor all evening, but we finished that night! Moved in the washer/dryer and oven.
Day #4 (Sunday)
Trip to Lowe’s for trim. We started cutting the toe molding and realized we needed a miter box. Trip to Walmart for a miter box … not in stock. Moved the fridge back in. Another trip to a different Walmart for a miter box.
Day #5 (Monday)
Cut all the trim and nailed it all in. Cleaned up our mess!!
I still haven’t taken a photo with the trim on, but we need to touch up a lot of paint (and still paint the cabinets and most of the trim), so I’ll just wait to post it.
A HUGE thank-you to Tad’s amazing parents for helping us with this big project!
We love our beautiful new floor!!
