Coffee Cupboard

October 4, 2013 by Aliesha

Tad and I are coffee fanatics, and we are a little particular about how it is ground and brewed, as well as what kind of beans we use!  Our coffee cupboard had become quite a disaster, so last week we reorganized our space so that it would serve us better.

Top shelf:  extra coffee that didn’t fit in jars, coffee syrup, and travel mugs
Middle shelf:  basket of tea, milk frother, filters, grinders, and the French press
Bottom shelf:  mugs, frequently used coffee beans in glass jars (from IKEA and the Dollar Tree)

Storing coffee beans in glass jars keeps them fresh longer and the glass doesn’t absorb the flavor like plastic would.

I added some labels so we could keep track of what’s what (and they can be easily changed if we buy a new variety).

Tad loves his new burr grinder and has retired the old blade grinder.  After breaking his Bodum French press, he bought this one, but disliked it and returned it so he could get another Bodum.

I also redid the chalkboard inside the cupboard!

I feel like an entire cupboard is a LOT of space to devote just to coffee, but we sure do enjoy drinking it, and it’s nice to have everything all in one place!

New Wall Decor

May 13, 2013 by Aliesha

I’ve finally added some decorations to our bedroom walls!  We inherited this floral wallpaper with the house, so I’m trying to work with it instead of fight against it.

I finally framed this beautiful print I bought back in college.  I couldn’t find a frame large enough in my price range, so I made this one using molding corner brackets!  (Tad helped.)  I painted it as well.

I’ve been dying to make a jewelry holder forever, so I finally bought some gorgeous knobs at Hobby Lobby and used leftover molding from the frame project to put this together!  I love how it turned out.

I am planning on framing another new print and hanging it above the jewelry holder.  Our room is starting to feel more personalized!

Homemade Laundry Detergent

October 20, 2011 by Aliesha

I’ve been making my own laundry detergent since May of this year, and I thought it was about time I shared my “recipe”!  I got this recipe from Andrea, who has been making her own detergent for years.

I wasn’t sure how I would like using this detergent, but after five months, I am positive I like it!  It’s pretty economical and it definitely takes up less space than a huge box or jug (which is great, since I don’t exactly have a laundry room).

For one batch, you need:
-1 cup super washing soda (I use Arm & Hammer brand)
-1 cup borax
-1 bar Fels-Naptha soap, finely grated (the only time-consuming part)*
(note: the most recent time I made this, I used Zote laundry soap instead, and I like it even more!)

Mix all ingredients in a big bowl, then put in a large Mason jar!  That’s it!  I use about 1 Tbsp. in each load of laundry, unless it is especially heavy (muddy clothes, etc.), in which case I’ll use 2 Tbsp.  One batch lasts me about 4 months (and I do a LOT of laundry).

*I bought a grater at the Dollar Tree so I wouldn’t have to use my cheese grater for this project.

Do you make your own laundry detergent?
