(I almost titled this post, “She’s Communicating!” but decided not to, since only my dad and brothers would get the slightly obscure Brian Regan reference.)
Yesterday Vera started saying “Dada”! She said it yesterday morning when Tad was at work, but later when he was home, she said it again. When I say “Dada,” or “Daddy,” she looks at Tad.
It’s amazing how much babies understand at this age, even when they are not able to communicate verbally. When I change Vera’s diaper, I say, “hold your feet!” (in the same tone of voice each time) and she grabs her toes, which definitely is more fun than when she used to stick her feet in the dirty diaper. When I was telling my mom about this on the phone, Vera grabbed her toes even though I wasn’t changing her diaper at the time. It’s so neat to see how much she understands!
I started teaching Vera the ASL sign for “milk” when she was three months old. I know she knows what it means now, and I’m pretty sure she signed it to me last night at church when she was getting hungry.
We rejoice with each milestone, knowing that Vera, like each one of us, is “fearfully and wonderfully made”!
all babies say dada 1st π
at least thats how its been with all 3of mine! – mama follows soon after tho hehe.
btw, her lil mouth hanging open is so cute. Owen is always like this – and really started doing it when teeth began coming in. So Vera may enter that world very soon!
Was this taken on your bed? if so, that is awesome light!
Oh and I meant to share this with you. Its my friend Lis’ daughter Providence (who is a month younger than Caleb) – signing when she was around age 2.

@DreaYep! Our bedroom has great light in the mornings. (It’s one of the few places in our house that does!)
How fun!! I love this! They definitely understand so much more than we give them credit for. It’s why it drives me crazy when mom’s talk bad about their kids right in front of them!
There’s definitely something to be said for teaching them ASL signs too! My cousin did this with her daughter, and it worked! She was signing “please” and “thank you” before she was able to say them. So cool! Go Vera!
Congratulations to Vera! And isn’t it just something – that with all the work you go to delivering that child and being her mama, she comes out with ‘Dada.’ Just figures. π

Awesome! That is so exciting!
I sit and say momma to my son daily. I’m bound and determined that will be his 1st word! So far no luck though. Congrats on Miss Vera’s accomplishments π
All four of my boys said dada first! Is it easier to say . . .or is it because I always was talking about Daddy to them? Daddy will be here soon, Daddy will be so proud of you . . .Daddy this and that! When Tad texted me this news – I asked if he was SURE she didn’t say GRAMMY first!
I don’t know how it is that Mommies spend more time than daddies with their little babies, and yet their first words are Dada, or “appa” in our case! It looks like language doesn’t matter – fathers do!
Bobbi, its funny because with Owen I have been saying “ma ma” to him CONSTANTLY and not “da da” to see if I could break the pattern our boys have set.. and nope. still dada 1st! Its just the Lords way of making the daddys feel extra special since π
