We started cloth diapering last weekend! Vera hit the 10 lb. mark at her one month appointment, so we thought it was time to try her cute cloth diapers! (Plus, we were getting a little tired of shelling out so much $$ for disposables.) We started with prefolds, a snappy, and covers, and after a day successfully using those we thought we’d see if her BumGenius one-size diapers would fit. They did! I thought they might still be a little too big around the leg holes, but they weren’t! They are slightly more bulky than disposables, but her clothes still fit just fine.
We think she’s stinkin’ cute in them, too! (Pictured below, newborn size prefold with a Thirsties cover.)
I’m still getting the hang of doing the diaper laundry, but between the prefolds and the Bums, I have enough diapers to last about 2 days. The trick is drying them. Our dryer is not very efficient (it’d probably take 2 hours to dry our diapers), plus I’ve heard BumGenius diapers last longer when NOT dried in the dryer, so we dry all our diapers on a drying rack in our kitchen (where our laundry is). It takes a pretty long time for inserts and prefolds to dry that way! So we’re doing diaper laundry every day at this point so that everything is dry and ready when we need it.
Oh, and we’re still using disposables at night and when we travel.
That’s our little cloth diaper update! We love using them and are excited about saving money this way!
The idea of cloth diapering appeals to my frugal side and we could sure use the money spent on disposables, but I struggle with laundry as it is. So no cloths for me.
BUT I applaud and admire mamas who do cloth diaper.:) love all your pix!
stick the inserts in the dryer even if its just for 30-40 minute, high heat. hang dry your covers always and bumgenius covers.
The insert itself you can dry the heck out of it lol and I never see a difference in it working less because of that.
– Oh and ES π you could totally do it, but it def takes a commitment too and you have to get into the routine of things. I have to admit the more kids we have the harder it is, because of more laundry, but also I can wash cloth at night, after the kids are in bed and their laundry is washed, and then just dry them over night. This seems to work best for us, or have them wash through the night, then pull them out of the wash in the morn, hang them and that frees up the washer all day too.
If you plan to have more babies, id def. buy them! π you will break even in cost around 3-4 mo. π and babies are in diapers til age 2 or longer!
But if not, its ok π
we are all so busy, it is a lot of extra work and if it will stress you out, then i wouldnt worry with it. You can cut cost elsewhere π which you obviously do with all your great trendy and affordable clothing finds!
good job!! We used diaposables at night and when travelling too. And I think we saved a LOT of money that way.
Cloth diapering is not only for the frugal. It’s also for those who care about the health of their babies! Disposables are full of cancer-causing chemicals that are linked to many other conditions, including asthma!
As parents, you have to be diligent in protecting your little ones from as many dangerous toxins as possible. Cloth diapering is one solution.
Good job!
Good job on the cloth! What we do for drying is that I put them on the rack in the evening (when I do the diaper laundry) and if they’re not dry in the am (the inserts), I’ll toss them in the dryer for a little while till they’re fully dry. Or, if I have the luxury of leaving them on the rack I will. We have enough to go three days so usually I’ll just toss in what I need and let the rest dry on the rack.
Keep it up, it’s addicting!
