After my success with my first DIY chalkboard paint project, I thought I’d try another project! This is actually something I’ve been wanting to do for months, and it is the real reason I bought the chalkboard paint.
When we moved into our house, this lovely portrait of the builder (yep, he built it by hand in 1920) of the house was left behind. Check out the ‘stache!
Anyway, I fell in love with the frame and wanted to do something special with it. So, I took it apart (don’t worry, I saved the painting of Mr. Everett)…
…primed the glass with two coats of primer…
…painted it with three coats of chalkboard paint…
…spray-painted the frame with a coat of black paint…
…and put it all back together! (P.S. While I was working with this rusty nail-infested frame, I was keenly aware of the fact that my tetanus shot is not up to date!)
Now it hangs proudly in our breakfast nook and I can write our weekly menus on it. I’m not sure if you can tell, but this is really huge!
I love all the great details on the frame!
I’m really happy with how it turned out! I’m thinking about other ways to use it too… love notes, favorite quotes, Christmas song lyrics, Bible verses, to-do lists, reminders, drawings… there are endless possibilities!

Love it! You’ve inspired me to go get some chalkboard paint! Now, to figure out what to paint.
Love it! I need a way to display our menu and I love this idea!!
I do have a feeling once I finally buy chalkboard paint I will want to use it…a lot!!!
Wow. What a gorgeous frame! Very cool that the original builder’s photo was at the house! I love to think back about how things were 90years ago when the house was built. 🙂 Great job on the menu board!
I just bought chalkboard paint yesterday now I just need to find a frame as pretty as yours! Looks great!
Love the black on black! Very nice job….makes me want to cook just so I need a menu!
Never thought to spray paint the glass. I found you on Tatertots & Jello and am so glad I clicked over!
I LOVE THAT! What a fun and useful idea!! Well done.
I love what you did! But I’m a historian junkie at heart, what do you have planned for the Mr.?
He needs a place somewhere in the home, don’t you think?
ok , must buy chalk board paint LOL thats so cool! u know a friend of mine stepped on a rusty nail, within like 12 hrs or less she had lock jaw , EEEk!! she was in the ER couldnt move her mouth, it was bad. She was fine tho, they had to give her a shot or something and she recovered really fast. My tetnus shot isnt up to date either.
You did a great job! Love the ornate frame, perfect for that space and to be a chalkboard!! Love it!
Hugs,
Victoria
Love this! That frame is gorgeous!
Saw this on Tatertots & Jello. I love that frame. Great idea to Upcycle it to make it functional and something you’ll use and see more often.
